MMM 3/30/09

It all started with this line in an email: Belize - Caye Caulker - April 24 to April 29 - VERY inexpensive!!!!! Our friend, Dave Rein, sent this out Friday morning. About 10 hours later, 3 couples had figured out babysitting and made airline arrangements. We have a villa we are looking into and hope to have that booked early this week. Crazy, fun, and I am so excited! Russ and Dave will be scuba diving and Belfy and us girls will be snorkeling and enjoying the warm, sandy beaches. 25 days until we leave, but I got the suitcases out last night!

Friday night, our old neighbors and dear friends from Rochester, the Flicek's, arrived at our house for the weekend. Trent had been talking about Ethan all weekend and so excited for him to come and play video games and star wars battles with him. Skylar is getting so big and she is quite the little talker! Saturday, Shawn and I made the must-do trek to Albertville for some outlet shopping. The guys hate this, yet, so much better for us girls to do it together then for them to be dragged along. We did make them bring the kids up to Stride Rite for a little shoe shopping after dinner however. Can't pass by a sale like that!

Sunday we bid good-bye to the Flicek's in the morning, and then Russ and I worked on the basement. I finally got down there to vacuum up the mess from the wiring and Russ continued to work on the plumbing and some wiring for outside in what will eventually be the 3-season porch. The kids played outside for a good chunk of the afternoon and then Grandpa & Grandma Leeder joined us for dinner after their visit in Spicer with Grandma & Gramdpa Soukup! Busy, busy weekend! And it was an early night to bed for all of us!

Friday Fill-Ins

Friday Fill-ins. Gotta love 'em. As always, my answers are in bold, and I write the first answer that comes to mind!

1. "In a hole in the ground there lived some nasty voles that messed up our neighbors yards, bad."

2. "These fill-ins are really out there this week, but that ain't no matter."

3. "After dark the rain began to fall again, and if it turns to snow, I am officially moving to Florida."

4. "Let's hope we don't book our 15th anniversary cruise and end up in celebrating from the hold of the Spanish galleon."

5. "There was a hand in the darkness, and I hoped Russ would know where to put it."

6. "Accidents ambush the unsuspecting, accidents, however, do not ambush clumsy people like myself at all."

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to the Flicek's arrival at our house for the weekend, tomorrow my plans include shopping with Shawn and Sunday, I want to relax!

And now this one is off the list...

I actually put writing this particular blog on a list. Of things. To do. Today.

Yeah. I'm a list-maker. Always have been. And just as there are people out there who think, "Why bother making a list?" I say to them, "Why would you NOT make a list?!" You have something to work off. Something to remind you. Something to give you satisfaction when you complete the task, item, whatever, on the list and cross it off when its done. Seriously, WHY would you NOT make a list?!

I love lists. Grocery shopping lists (even though you all know how much I detest grocery shopping, you still have to make a list), gift lists, things you need to do lists, lists of projects you need to complete lists, spelling lists (for Trent & those are courtesy Mr. Churchill), lists of important birthdays (that's a hint Lisa Trippel), lists, lists, lists!

I remember being 10 years old and getting ready to go to the cabin for the summer. My parents were divorced by then, and my dad had my sister and I pack our own bags. We would be there for about 2 weeks every summer. I started making a list of all the clothes I would bring and what days I would wear them. I still do the same thing 25 years later. Now I do it for everyone in our family. You should of seen the notebook I brought with us to DisneyWorld. Luckily, everyone still goes with my flow, but I know that will change in a few years. Anyway, back to the summer I was 10. List of what toys to bring. List of books to bring with and what books to look for while up at the cabin to read. List of what activities to do at the cabin. Lists of what meals to ask grandma to make.

List-making followed me into high school. Lists of things for class, lists of what clothes I wanted to buy with the meager amount of money I earned working at the daycare. Lists of what goals I had for track and cross-country. Lists of all the boys I had crushes on. Lists of the colleges I wanted to check-out. Opps! Wait! How did the mention of a list of boy crushes make it into this blog? That would be one list, that while very long, was never acted upon. Hmmm. Well, at any rate, I think you get the gist. I don't think I need to go on into college or preparing for our wedding or the insane amount of lists I had made being pregnant. Both times.

And you should all know that my dad has worked in the paper industry for over 30 years. So I always had a ton of paper pads handy thanks to him. Ahh, yet another reason to add to my list of why my dad is a hero to me.

I like making lists. It makes me happy. It's ultimate organizing... in list form. It's the calming technique before the craziness starts. It's a list. Yeah for lists! And now this one, is off the list.

MMM 3/23/09

Another Monday morning, but this one is very windy and rainy. And while I feel horrible for the people who live along the Red River, I kinda wonder why they haven't been stock-piling sandbags all winter long. Spring flooding seems to happen along there almost every other year. Maybe it's time to start building a dike or one big wall? I don't know.

Okay, so Friday Russ took a day off work (not to hunt or fish-shocker I know) but to help his dad finish the wiring in the basement! Yeah! Now to finish a few plumbing things and figure out what kind of fireplace to put down there-we are debating between pellet and gas (any suggestions welcome) and then we can hopefully start sheet-rocking the week in April when Russ is home thanks to the economic downfall and his company's mandatory week closure of the plant. I can't wait to have sheet-rock up!! Lena also helped me paint our master bathroom and it is a really nice brown color now. Excuse the wonky lighting, but see for yourself:

Friday night was Otterfest at Trent's school. Which is his big school carnival. Tim & Lena came with us and it was a good thing they did. A mistake with our volunteer hours, but it worked for both of us to run a game together (speed pitch) because the grandparents were there to take control of Trent & Addy! Trent won the 2nd grade boy poster contest! He was pretty proud and happy. They both got to play a variety of games, win some prizes, and get cotton candy. Doesn't get much better than that for a school carnival! Here is Trent's winning poster:

The kids had a blast showing G&G Soukup how to Wii bowl. We had several tournaments over the weekend. Addy is getting really good. Her record bowled is a 217 and Trent's is a 197. Quite impressive! So we now have G&G Soukup Mii people milling about the plaza as well. And when my mom came to visit with the kids on Sunday, Trent and Addy were thrilled to introduce yet another player to the Wii! And now Baba is a Mii person too. My mom was a big time bowler back when I was little, and after a rough start of playing the Wii, she really got into the bowling. She even wanted to play a game by herself when the kids were done bowling! I can agree with the advertisement that stated the Wii brings generations together for fun!

Saturday we had a chance to get the kids scooters put together and get out and take a few walks. It was a beautiful day and the kids enjoyed all afternoon outside playing with their friends from the neighborhood. Our yard continues to be wet and mushy, but we were lucky and did not have voles wreck our lawn like several neighbors did. Since we did the landscaping so late in the season and Russ had just fertilized (apparently the little buggers don't like fertilizer, but do like long grass), the voles stayed away from us. Must remember this for next fall.

Sunday turned out to be a nice day too. More working in the basement for Russ, playing outside for the kids and what was I doing? Umm, not scrapbooking, but catching up on laundry! I usually do it on Thursdays, but didn't want to have the mess going with Tim & Lena visiting. So by Sunday, it really needed to be done! After a dinner of grilled chicken and some lego playing, it was off to bed early for the kids. And almost for mom and dad, but Addy woke up at about 10:15pm with nightmares from watching Harry Potter with my mom (I told you that was going to happen Mom! And so against my better judgement. Oh well) I ended up sleeping with her in the guest room. I really hope all goes well for sleeping tonight though!

Friday Fill-ins

And...here we go! As always, my answers are off the top of my head and in bold!

1. Why do we have to live where it snows?

2. Updating my facebook status everyday and DVRing TV shows are now habits.

3. I have an incredible family.

4. I had never heard the phrase "so and so is bucky" and it wasn't until my mother-in-law explained that it means someone is crabby. I think it's a New Ulm thing.

5. I dance the way I always do.

6. How was I to know that painting our master bathroom could be such a huge change!

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to Otterfest, tomorrow my plans include buying and watching TWILIGHT and Sunday, I want to scrapbook!

MMM 3/16/09

Whew! It was a packed weekend of activities for the Soukup family!

Friday night, in anticipation of family game night, Russ went all stealth on us and bought a Wii! We had looked at getting one at Christmas time, but decided against it. Russ got a nice bonus from his work this week though, and found a Wii at Costco and bought it. He certainly surprised me and the kids. I do have to say, it is a fun and entertaining little game system. We created our Mii people and then did our first family game of Wii bowling. Lots of fun!!

Saturday, Trent and Russ were gone all day at the Scout's Wolf Howl. They get together with other dens in the district and do a bunch of activities including archery & swimming. Addy and I cleaned house, went shopping, and played. That night, friends of our made through Scouts, the Dusbabek's, invited us out to their house for a bonfire. I was a little unsure of sitting around a bonfire when it is still winter time, but it had been a nice day out, so I was up for the adventure. My doubts were quickly put aside. It turned out to be a great evening! A nice glass of wine and relaxing and chatting in front of a roaring fire, ahhh, so nice. The kids had a blast running around outside, toasting marshmallows and Cheetos (yeah, that would be the boys) and playing with their friends. It was a great evening, and Trent and Addy fell right into bed when we got home!

Sunday, I had the girls I went to graduate school with and their kids over to our place. There are five us girls that graduated back in 1998 with Master degrees in counseling. We now have 9 kids and one on the way between us, and 3 of us are stay-at-home moms! Amazing what a difference 10 years can make! Anyway, I made a big brunch spread and we had a wonderful afternoon visiting and playing. Russ took Trent to his communion retreat Sunday afternoon as well. It was one of the last steps he needed to complete before he goes through the communion ceremony in May. The kids also got some playing time in outside in the nice weather before wrapping up our weekend, and it sounds like the rest of the week is going to be a nice little peek into spring-time as well.

MMM 3/9/09

Wow! The Monday Morning Minutes totally got away from me until this afternoon. I was tired this morning, very tired. Not only did I lose an hour due to daylight savings, but Addy had a horrible nightmare last night and instead of putting her back into her bed for a 4th time during the middle of the night, we just let her sleep on our floor. But man, does that cutie pootie make a lot of noise when she sleeps! Trent was also coughing away in his room, so I was NOT on top of things this morning at all. After a slow start, getting Trent ready and off to school, Addy's bath, a good work-out on the ellipitcal and a shower for myself, I was finally awake.

This weekend was pretty quiet for us. Addy got a hair-cut Friday and here she is with short hair: still adorable, but she was a little worried that people wouldn't recognize her. Funny the things a 5-year old worries about.

After her haircut, Addy and I hit the stores for some baby shopping! My step-sister found out she is having a BOY in July and can I just say that he is going to be one handsomely dressed little guy! We probably went a little over-board, but we were having way too much too picking out outfits. I mean way too much fun!

Saturday, Trent and Russ had an ice fishing event for Scouts. Addy went with them. Not surprisingly, the boys & their siblings really didn't fish, but played tag on the ice and explored the woods on shore. And Russ didn't take any pictures because he was too busy being Cubmaster and talking with the other dads. They had a great time though.

Sunday, Russ worked on the basement. We are getting closer to being able to sheet-rock! I got some scrapbooking in and the kids watched movies and played. Pretty low-key. But it was nice for once to just be chillin' at home.

Friday Fill-ins

My answers are in bold. And...here we go!

1. Helping a new mom struggling with a new baby and a sleepy toddler by offering to carry in the toddler at Addy's preschool was my last random act of kindness.

2. Another place, another time.

3. I am loyal and passionate in matters of the heart.

4. Coffee, tea or neither for me.

5. I really wish that the writers on LOST would of given Sawyer & Juliet separate paths.

6. Our friendship reminds me that there are few things in life as precious.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to catching up on 24 with Russ, tomorrow my plans include scrapbooking and B-day wishes to Grandma Rose (86) and Sunday, I want to NOT watch snow fall !

Sparkly vampires and cute shift-changers for starters

Well, I read all 4 books in the Twilight series in the span of 2 weeks. I am spent. And just like whenever I finished a Harry Potter book, I need time to reflect and wait before I can start another book.

If you haven't read the books, and plan to, or haven't finished reading them, then don't read any more of this blog, there might be spoilers and I hate doing that to people unnecessarily if I can help it.

Out of the four books in the series (Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, & Breaking Dawn), Eclipse was my absolute favorite. I read that one in less than 2 days. (Russ is very happy I am done with the series by the way, something about me totally ignoring him come bedtime ;) Something about that 3-way relationship between Edward, Bella, and Jacob made it so real despite the fact that you were reading about a vampire, his mortal love, and her best friend, who happens to be a shift-changing wolf. Life, and love, is like that sometimes where you are pulled both directions by love and friendship and what feels right in your heart. And for Bella it was having both men equally in hers. And it shows that even though Edward and Bella are to eternally made (or created- in Bella's case, ha!) for one another, that Edward couldn't be absolutely everything for Bella, who still needed and wanted her best friend Jacob in her life. Bella treated Edward very human in that sense. No one person can be everything for another. I like that; I get that.

The last book, Breaking Dawn, was actually my least favorite of the four books. I'm not quite sure why though. I think because it all just seemed too "easy" for Bella to become a new vampire and have this power that she mastered. I don't know. I haven't put my finger on it yet. That is what I will solve in my subconscious mind tonight while I dream! I do like how Stephanie Meyer portrayed the bond between Nessie and Bella. If you have kids, you know without a doubt that you would put your life on the line for your child(ren) and do whatever you had to to ensure that their future was in fact there for them. Bella most certainly did that for Nessie. It was exciting and defitintely kept my interest, it was just my least favorite of the four.

Knowing that movies are never as good as the books they are based on, I am still excited to see Twilight. It comes out on DVD March 21st (take a stab at what I will be doing that night!), but I also hear that some movie theatres are still showing it. I'll get Russ to watch it with me, and maybe he will be able to see why I was so intent on reading them all. He dealt with Harry Potter, (and ended up liking the movies) so he will be fine with these too!

MMM 3/2/09

The Soukup family had a relatively quiet past weekend. Saturday moring, I had my first workout on our new ellipitcal. I made it 12 minutes, I was sweating and my heart rate was up there. I am really out of shape. (This morning I worked out for 20 minutes and it felt great!)

Saturday afternoon, we were invited to go ice skating at St. Thomas as our good friend Belfy manages the ice rink there. It's always nice to be able to skate indoors and have an entire rink to yourselves! Addy is getting really good on skates. She liked being the goalie and trying to stop all the pucks from getting in. Trent is getting better on skates as well, but I think Addy has a more natural ability toward learning skating. I might have to put her in lessons next winter if she is interested. After skating, we went out to eat at Buffalo Wild Wings with the Trippels, Baileys, and Kim George. So good to relax and eat a good meal with friends!

Sunday, Russ worked in the basement. He is finishing with the wiring and needs to get some of the plumbing done as well. Our goal is to be ready to start drywalling the week of April 20th when Russ will be off work for a week. In some cost-saving efforts, they are closing down the plant at his work. So, he figures he might as well be working on something worthwhile at home then. I think it will be nice to get the drywall done and have that headache out of the way. I managed to scrapbook, and finish the 3rd book in the Twilight series on Sunday as well. The kids were happy to have a day to just hang out and play at home! We have a very busy week ahead of us, something going on almost every night this week, but next weekend should be relatively quiet, for us :)
